Hello Lakeside Parents and Students!
Kuay and I are excited to kick off the second year of Fit Family Focus (FFF). For those of you that are new to Lakeside this is a program that was implemented last year to encourage parents and their children to exercise together. Last year we had just shy of 90 kids/families participate in the program. We hope to at least double the number of participants this year.
How does the program work? 1. Child(ren) and parent(s) exercise together twice a week for 20 minutes for a total of 160 minutes each month. This is the minimum requirement but we would encourage you to exercise together 3-4 times per week and/or increase your time to 30 + minutes. A log sheet will be provided each month to record your exercise minutes. ****On the log sheet please include in the spaces provided- • Child’s Full Name • Class (i.e. K5, 1B, 3D, 5B) • Tally the total minutes for the month
What activities qualify for the FFF program? • Wednesday Walking and Wheeling to Lakeside- Go Green on Wednesday • Shooting hoops with Mom and/or Dad • Walking the dog with Mom and/or Dad • Riding bikes to the park with Mom and/or Dad • Going skating with Mom and/or Dad • Hitting golf balls with Mom and /or Dad • Practicing (outside of organized practices) soccer, volleyball, baseball etc with Mom and/or Dad • Raking leaves with Mom and/or Dad This list could go on and on but the key is we want you out there moving, exercising with your kids. What activities do not qualify for the FFF program? • Taking your child to sports practice and dropping them off or spectating. • Going to your child’s game and watching. • Anything that doesn’t allow you and your child to participate in an activity together.
Please know that our goal is not to penalize kids that are involved in sports. The focus of this program is to get families to exercise together and to model a healthy lifestyle.
2. At the end of each month the log sheets will be turned into the Fit Family Focus box in the front office (the deadline for log sheet turn in is one week after the last day of each month). The children that have met the 160 minute requirement for the month will receive 6 bonus laps towards their mileage award in PE. **** NEW THIS YEAR- the kids will also receive a “fitness” token. The fitness token is a little “active/running” stick figure which is similar to the “foot” tokens the kids receive in PE as they reach a mileage goal. All participants will receive a certificate of participation at the end of the year.
3. The program will begin in October and run through the month of May. Since this program is linked to the PE Mileage Club program we have one more incentive for the kids. Several students each year accumulate enough mileage that they technically completed a marathon- 26.2 miles. **** Any child that accumulates 26 + miles by the end of the year will receive a “26.2” marathon token at the end of the year. The bonus laps you and your child accumulate through the year by participating in FFF will help them achieve their marathon goal.
How do I get the log sheets and updated information about the program • Log sheets and general information will come home in your child’s back pack for the months of October and November. However, in an attempt to “go green” and save paper, starting in December we will have the log sheets (and any new information) posted here where you can download and copy the log sheets each month. There will be extra copies available in the front office if you are not able to access the PTO website. • Mrs. Bladl and Mrs. Head will be reminding the kids of the deadlines for log sheets and encouraging them along the way.
We are so excited about the new and improved FFF program and incentives. A huge “Thank You” to Mrs. Bladl and Mrs. Head for their commitment and to Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Cordell for their support of FFF.
