Author, Kimberly Willis Holt, to visit Lakeside Library The library is honored to welcome award winning author, Kimberly Willis Holt to Lakeside Elementary. Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades will have the opportunity to meet Mrs. Holt, listen to her insight on the writing experience, and learn about her life as a writer. As the winner of the National Book Award, numerous Parents' Choice Awards, and many State Children's Choice Awards, there are few children's authors today who write with her depth and perception. Her visit offers a memorable experience for all students and teacher. Schedule is as follows: 8:15am-3rd grade, 4A, and 4B; 9:30am-5th grade, 4C, 4D. 2/15/12
Jump Rope for Heart Ready, Set, JUMP! Everyone is practicing his or her jump-rope skills in P.E., getting ready for this year's JUMP ROPE FOR HEART event, which promises to be a great workout and a lot of fun. It will be held on Thursday, March 8th during Open House. This annual event brings in money for the American Heart Association to help continue research and heart education. The collection envelopes each student received should be returned to the homeroom teacher by Wednesday, March 7th. We ask that children not go door-to-door or ask strangers for donations. Family and friends are welcome to support your child's participation by making contributions by cash, check, or online. Donations are tax-deductible and many companies offer matching gift programs. Please make checks payable to the American Heart Association. @ Your Public Library The Coppell Public Library is pleased to introduce a new storytime for children of all ages. Second Saturday Storytime is held the second Saturday of each month at 11:00 a.m. and was designed for families who are unable to attend regular weekday storytimes. Studies show that reading to children helps improve literacy skills; bring the whole family and enjoy stories together. Deforest Road Project Update To the residents in the Deforest Road area, here is a quick update on the construction process....The contractor has installed all the foundations & conduit for the traffic signal at Deforest & MacArthur. The poles & electronics take a while to order and get ready. Most of the tree removal is complete. There was some damage to a screen wall as part of this process but it has been repaired. Though we needed it for our lakes, the rains last week caused the contractor to lose a few days of work. The utility contractor is installing drainage pipe from Allen Road west. Over the next few weeks you will see additional drainage pipe being installed and some water service and fire hydrant relocations. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. STAAR/End of Course Parent Information Meetings Parents of current students enrolled in CISD are invited to attend one of the two public information meetings designed to help parents learn more about the state end of course tests and STAAR testing and these tests will impact their children. These presentations will include updated information that was not previously available during the Fall 2011 parent meetings. Elementary Focus (3rd-5th grade) will be from 6:30-7:30pm on February 13, 2012 in the Austin Elementary Cafeteria. Secondary Focus (6th-9th) will be from 6:30-7:30pm on February 16, 2012 in the CHS Lecture Hall. Download for full information. 2/5/12
Girls on the Run - DFW Learn. Dream. Live. Run. We envision a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. This 10 week program, meeting twice a week, challenges and encourages the girls, whatever their fitness level with warm-ups, running workouts and games which teach important life skills. Tuition is $120, and scholarships are available through Council Director. Classes Begin: February 13, 2012, meeting Mondays & Wednesdays from 5:30pm-7pm at the Coppell Family YMCA. Lakeside Elementary Chess Program The Lakeside Elementary Chess Program (presented by USA Chess) will be starting soon! Who: Grades K-5! Lakeside Elementary Drama Club Join us for our own production of Peter Pan. The Lakeside Elementary Drama Club is for K-5th grade students who are interested in learning more about theatre arts, acting, rehearsing, and performing a production on stage. We will meet after school in the cafeteria for 12 weeks on Wednesdays: K-2nd from 3:05pm-4:05pm; 3rd-5th from 3:05pm-5pm, beginning Wednesday, January 18th. The performance of "Peter Pan" is tentatively set for April 11th at 7pm. There is a participation fee ($170 for grades 3-5 and $120 for K-2) that covers professional instruction, some sets/costumes and club t-shirt! There is also an annual registration fee of $30, good through January 2013. Registration is handled ONLINE only. There is limited enrollment-first come, first served! 1/15/12

Lakeside now has an account with Appolicious.com. This is a website that lets Lakeside track the apps that they are currently using. No login needed...just go to http://www.appolicious.com/users/lakesidecoppell/library and browse the collection. As new apps are added, the list on Appolicious will be updated. PLEASE NOTE that Appolicious may have ads that could be considered inappropriate for young children.  2011 Lakeside Teacher of the YEAR!! Congratulations to Mrs. Timmerman! Mrs. Timmerman has taken the challenge program and infused it with dynamic lessons that integrate technology and deeper thinking. Mrs. Timmerman is a leader for our students and a trailblazer for her peers. Mrs. Timmerman is a campus leader. She trains peers in differentiation strategies, she is the UIL campus coordinator, she sponsors student council, 4th grade science club, & math olympiad, as well as being a Lakeside mom. Campbell's Labels for Education Dear Parents: We are beginning to collect Campbell’s Labels for Education! The Labels for Education program is a great way to earn FREE merchandise for our school, and label collection and redemption is so easy. Participation in the program is simple – save labels from eligible Campbell products and send them to the school in a baggie labeled with the number of labels included. The deadline to send in labels for this school year is April 10th, however all labels sent in by December 15th will be eligible for doubling!
